For refined oils, producers should aim for a peroxide value below 1, better 0.5 meq O2/kg oil, while the peroxide value for virgin oils can be higher, up to 3 meq O2/kg oil.
Infant formula contains 25% fat which is very sensitive to oxidation so the fat handling and storage during and after manufacture is critical to avoid shelf life issues.
The Vegetable oil used in Infant Formula Milk Powder / Baby Milk Powder must be stored and handles correctly at all times. The tanks in which it is stored must be clean / sterile / dry as any water residues will rapidly accelerate the deterioration of the oil.
The tanks are usually gas flushed with Nitrogen to eliminate any oxygen in the atmosphere of the tank which will also result in rapid oxidation of the milk powder.

Canning lines will usually have a truntable for collation of empty cans and a conveyor which inverts the can and gicves a blast of clean dry sterile air.
This is usually followed by Ultra Violet Sterilization (UV) of the inside of the can in a long UV tunnel. The can is then righted before scoop insertion and filling.
Infant Formula Scoops are sensitive items re sterility and ideally should be placed under the cans plastic over cover lid if it has one and individually wrapped in a sterile wrapper.
The cans are filled with powder using a vacuum filler which draws the powder into the can and reduces dust in the machines atmosphere.
The infant formula canning line and conveyors from filling to seaming should have an inert gas atmosphere of Nitrogen / CO2 or a combination of gasses.
The infant Formula Can seamer should also be gas flushed to ensure no oxyge enters the can / product during seaming.
The infant formula oxygen level is critical to ensure the shelf life of the baby formula milk powder at a minimum of two years from filling the can.
Cans are take from the line at regular intervals and tested for oxygen content.
The room and the canning line should have oxygen sensors and alarms in case of leakege of gas reducing the oxygen content of the room. (Employee safety).
