We all think that we know what makes the ideal employee, someone with a great work ethic, able to balance their home and personal affairs with overperforming at work, posess integrity and reliability, consistency of approach, loyalty, confidentiality and an enjoyment of doing a job well. He or she will likely require to be well presented, well qualified, well experienced. He or she will need to possess the personality traits suitable for that particular position. He or she may take the company down a certain path towards achieving the company "Vision" within the culture fostered by the organization. i.e. If you select a candidate that is a 'risk taker' with exceptional leadership skills and desire for continuous change then he/she will likely direct the company along the road of fostering a 'risk taking' innovative culture. Perhaps you want someone identical to the current post holder with perhaps a little more drive and enthusiasm which should ensure no major changes to the way that things are currently done. The quality of the hiring decision will impact on your company's and probably your future and so it is important to identify clearly the company's needs.

Establish the position AND 'person specification' (dimensions) for the position.

What differentiates two identical companies operating in the same field of business?

PEOPLE - Develop a strong focussed team with clear goals, reporting and monitoring briefs and this will make the difference between you and the also ran's. One poor performer in a good close knit team is like fitting a faulty spark plug to an engine - you know it will never perform to it's best until the correct part is fitted and the engine can then be highly tuned.

Leadership Attributes

Enthusiasm - A prerequisite for a leader, in some leaders it may be passionate and in others a slow-burning enthusiasm but it will always be present in a leader.

Integrity - The critical quality that engenders trust (Knowing that the other person will always do what is right for you / the team / the company, rather than simply for themselves) Trust is built through deeds and takes time to establish and unfortunately we all know that this can be lost in an instant. Reliability, (actions speak louder than words) and consistency of doing things quickly are admirable qualities.

Clarity, Demandingness / toughness and fairness - Leadership is not a popularity contest. To gain the respect of colleagues a leader requires to be consistent and fair with high standards which he will not compromise on. Not asking others to do things he will not commit to himself.

Humanity - Dead / Cold fish do not make good leaders. Leaders should have a genuine interest in their colleagues personally and an inner kindness when the occasion calls for it.

Confidence - No leader can operate without a quiet confidence and this should not be confused with brashness or overconfidence. All people require confidence to get things done and it is up to the leader to instill this quiet confidence in his team.

Humility - Having a real sense of ones own limitations shown by ones readiness to listen, learn and admit when one is wrong coupled with a reverence for others.

Courage - Moral or physical is a universally admired attribute
